FAST-CLASS PACERS WHO CAN FLIRT WITH 1:50 ARE GATHERED HERE TODAY AT HARRAH'S
The top local conditioned pacers are set to go this Sunday afternoon at Harrah's Philadelphia, with either of the two divisions of the $17,500 featured event or the $15,000 co-feature having the potential to flirt with the 1:50 barrier over a surface that has been very fast in the early days of the meet. Of the horses in these four features, no fewer than ten of them already sport lifetime marks of 1:50 or faster, and two of them are millionaires -- DOCTOR BUTCH ($1,233,792) and DYNAMIC YOUTH ($1,183,367). ANALYSIS OF KEY RACES
2nd race: We mention DOCTOR BUTCH and his millionaire status in the lead story, so why we do pick a horse with earnings under $70,000 to upset him in here today? Because we think OPTIONS ARE ADREAM is a horse who has enor- mous potential -- as shown last time at DD, second start Lasix, where he went first-over and came home in 53.4 - 26.4!
6th race: BELL I NO makes his second start for Team Burke after not having it easy in his initial go for his new connections: off a week, HMT, higher class, post seven, hard-used early. Burke's success rate with recent acquisitions has always been good, and that trend may continue here over P H KENNY, IRA CHIEF, and other worthy opposition.
11th race: MILLIONDOLLAR WAVE gets a downturn in company for his second local start for trainer Scott Di Domenico, who has been winning at a 20% rate. His mile vs. better wasn't bad, either: the tough "tuck-then-first-up" journey, going his own last half in 55.1. BESTJETYET is, to us, often a good longshot, but perhaps a bit iffy as likely choice.
13th race: SPEED AGAIN, a career winner of over $950,000+, qualified well on 4-8 for Burke, and then just wasn't ready for a front-end mile vs. slightly better at The Meadowlands. He figures to be tighter in his second start back, and might not be looking back in this field. If the price is short on him, check Exactas (see below) and Late Doubles payoffs.
WATCH OUT FOR: The tidal wave of chalk early in the meet was showing signs of loosening at the beginning of the week, but the favorites are still coming in steadily so far -- but there is still a way to make money even if you think the favorite may be overbet to win. Check the monitors, and see what the Exactas are paying with the winner on top -- you may not love a potential $4.00 win payoff, but if you think the favorite will win half the time and another horse will be second to him half of the time, that's a 3-1 shot, or $8.00. If the probable Exacta is $12.00 or $14.00, that's a 50% or a 75% "value"! And it happens more often than you may think!
