The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono will have its first four-cards-a-week racing schedule in place this Saturday through Tuesday. This is the basic schedule to be used at the mountain oval throughout the 2017 season, with the odd exception (e.g., Easter Sunday, April 16, is dark, and there will be a doubleheader of racing cards on Kentucky Derby Saturday, May 6).

Your Guide To Handicapping Harrah's Philadelphia. HIGH-CLASS PACERS GRACE THE SUNDAY CARD AT HARRAH'S PHILADELPHIA A fine assemblage of fast pacing power has been gathered here this afternoon at Harrah's Philadelphia, and if the times from Opening Day, last Sunday, are any indication, we should again be in for some very swift racing and new lifetime marks this afternoon. High-level conditioned pacers going for $17,500 in race 11; the section just below that one racing for $15,000 in events 4 and 8; the $16,000 high-end claiming handicap group slotted for the 5th race; and a group racing for the same purse leading off the card in the transitional "nw 5 races" class: excellent horses -- and horsemen -- should provide racing fans a treat today. Glad you're aboard! ANALYSIS OF KEY RACES 4th race:We're taking a little shot that HALL BRO will be able to use his inside starting position to great advantage today, and may be a bit of a price in this good group. Last week he left the switch in about 13 seconds to the 1/8 to clear from PP8 at Pocono, and held third to two very rough customers. A good trip (and good luck) may get a good payday. FIRST RACE – Temperatures at the high mid-60s to start and the low mid-60s to finish … Stretch headwind … ALEXANDER HANOVER launched three-wide off poor cover ¾ and gained throughout the last quarter three-deep, still had a lot of ground to make up in midstretch but just got there.
Knowledge is power when it comes to handicapping. We'll help you keep an eye on the trends with periodic updates right here on PA HarnessWeek. Check out the chart above for results through April 4th at Pocono.
FIRST RACE – Mid 50s temperatures go into high-40s by card’s end … Stretch tailwind … THREEUPTHREEDOWN was last save the breaker but followed excellent cover the last 3/8, widest in the lane and went on steadily to get there in plenty of time. MASS BALANCE went right to the lead,
The Cantab Hall filly Hot Mess Hanover looked anything but a mess upon coming in to The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono Tuesday night, taking the fastest of the three $15,000 divisions of the first leg of the Bobby Weiss Series for trotting distaffs in 1:56.3.
FIRST RACE – 41 degrees; a bigger factor is a stretch tailwind, which can be seen through the fractions in most races … NEXT SUCCESS left for control of the throttle at the 3/16, did not let THE ROCKINATOR go nearing 3/8 when that one failed to produce quickstep, had pressure from that one,
Harrah's Philadelphia opened its 11th season of harness racing on Sunday (April 2) with moderate temperatures, an abundance of sun, and a brand new wager.
The Western Terror gelding Dash Of Danger -- and his driver Matt Kakaley -- emerged with top honors during the opening night of the 2017 Bobby Weiss Series at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono on Sunday (April 2), with Dash Of Danger winning in 1:51.4 to knock a tick off his lifetime best, set last week. The Ron Burke-conditioned 4-year-old, owned by the partnership of Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi and Marc Reynolds, had to overcome the tough tuck-then-first-over trip, but he had more than enough power in the lane in winning by 2-3/4 lengths. Dash Of Danger’s driver, Matt Kakaley, was the human star of the night, as he posted six winners. He had gotten the card off to a spectacular start by reining home the longest shot on the board, Threeupthreedown, to a $119.20 payoff in the Early Double opener, then came right back with another of Burke’s three winning charges on the night, Migrate Blue Chip, to complete a very rare 9-9 Double worth $501.80. Your Guide To Handicapping Harrah's Philadelphia. TRADITION OF "TROTTIN' THURSDAYS" RETURNS TODAY AT PHILLY The Thursday cards at Harrah's Philadelphia have often been programmed to feature fast performers at the trotting gait, and that tradition returns in 2017 as Harrah's Philadelphia has a pair of features for the local diamondgaited elite. Developing horses will contest the highest purse of the day, $16,000, in the "steppingstone" class for non-winners of 5 races lifetime, race 10, with EDINBURGH, WRIGHTWOOD, and MR PAUL coming off wins, and hoping to raise up another rung today. The $13,000 seventh race has a full field of nine of veteran conditioned horses; FLEET BUMBLEBEE, off a good second at Pocono, draws post two for driver George Napolitano Jr. ANALYSIS OF KEY RACES 5th race: As none of the likely favorites fires our imagination in this event, we'll try to get a bit of a price on PICARD. Note that he was involved in a fast front-end battle at Dover on 2-20, and held fairly well; after that was post eight, then a scratch, then a big move, after which he again held pretty well. Figuring he'll be tighter today, and thus a stab for price. |
